The Trump movement's most telling and characteristic moments – not its most crucial, nor most harsh, nor most threatening, nor most foolish, but potentially its most enlightening – came earlier this autumn. During the period of multiple weeks, the US president started showing all observers his plans for a lavish reception room twice the size than the White House and subsequently started solo dismantling the eastern section to construct it.
He has done things ten thousand times worse – the present calculation of casualties due to his slashing to USAID is 600,000 and increasing, and recently an analysis projected his petroleum strategies would result in fatalities another 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have dared – genuinely, no other president would have imagined – independently wrecking significant portions of the presidential residence to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of multiple America's wealthiest, almost all of whom conduct transactions with the government.

As disorienting as it is to observe the leader try to upend the old idea about democracy and exchange it with its direct contrary, there exists a significant segment within America who wouldn't consider it completely novel. That is those of us – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were educated as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have witnessed over the years as rightwing evangelical churches turned the Jesus we were raised with into the total contrary of our perception of his character. Essentially, they converted a persona of affection into an icon of hate who approves precisely the cruelties that he denounced in the Gospel; this has happened more slowly, through multiple decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.
A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself
Hence I shall explain the Savior from my upbringing, as conceptually Jesus is the center of any Christian faith, and given that the rapidly expanding group of Americans might have little sense about him as they consider themselves non-believers or doubters or religiously unaffiliated. I take no issue with these various perspectives, nor with different religions; however I believe that exist valuable insights of great price in the Christian story.
It is decidedly not the story of a powerful ruler appearing; conversely, an infant arrives to parents without shelter in an automotive shelter, who need to rapidly escape to a foreign land to escape undercover officers. The child matures in humble circumstances, a laboring woodworker; his message concerns compassion for others, especially for the impoverished – and not a sentimental love, but tangible care, demonstrated through nourishing and protecting. Christ's response to aggression is to present the other cheek – not as an act of compliant endurance, but as a way to instruct the aggressor; his method regarding offenses states that when someone steals your outer garment you should give them your pullover also.
The apparent and clear reality that the Jesus in biblical accounts calls for a type of profound affection focused on the poor is what has always made Christian religion something of a scandalous religion: attractive to the masses, but because of its natural unconventionality needing to be restrained. In the fifties it was contained by dilution – Protestant Christianity was so prevalent that it basically baptized the status quo.
A Struggle for the Highest Within Us
Hence I have become encouraged to observe the persistent defiance regarding Trump develop during the previous year. It has served as great solace to assist in constructing the campaign that has taken to the streets through repeated demonstrations, and likely has encouraged electorate to participate in numbers during minor elections. We will need to continue it, and with identical determination, displaying national flags throughout each rally and appeals to the best parts in US history.

The country is optimally secured, essentially, by relationship to the best in US heritage, similar to Christianity is most protected by relationship to that which renders it distinctive and wonderful, specifically the model of Christ. In neither case does it mean feigning the most damaging of both America and religious tradition was nonexistent; it signifies both meekness and belief, a mixture that committed American Christians ought to accept.
