A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's key government projects.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” affirmed the head of state.
The official reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The building of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in national projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked significant questions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party called for an prompt suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This stoppage was suggested pending a full technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."
In response, the president maintained that the train had been running in total adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these national projects.
