Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The ex-president was convicted of plotting a government overthrow in September and handed more than over two decades in incarceration, but he was staying under home detention pending appeals.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after fresh information came to light.

This involved trying to remove his ankle monitor and a call for a demonstration that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the detention, the judge said data from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on digital networks on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or see it all from your phone there on your settee? I invite you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could "pray for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was convicted of orchestrating a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
