The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
