British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.
The location, identified by surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of access tunnels providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.
There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.
The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.
RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of numerous British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."
Last December, the US military executed what it described as a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an attack killed two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The UN estimates IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
