Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for hours when numerous of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
